Most homeowners considering a new residential think they just have to choose between wood or vinyl, but metal is an increasingly popular fencing material choice. Iron fences aren’t just for mansions or businesses. They can be a stunning addition to almost every home, providing a sturdy, safe perimeter boundary that will last years with proper maintenance. Use this handy maintenance guide to keep your iron fence in perfect shape.
Clear Your Fence
While vines climbing over a wrought iron fence are romantically beautiful in some ways, all that vegetation is not good for the metal. It can hold in extra moisture and increase the likelihood of rust. Take the time to remove all of the vegetation, including older dead leaves and vines.
Inspect For Rust And Repair
Once the fence is clear of vegetation, it is easier to see where the rust spots are. Rust is a very big issue for iron fences, even small spots. Take time to thoroughly inspect the entire fence for spots of rust, especially down by the base. Any rust spots that you find need to be dealt with immediately. Brush them with a fine wire brush until all signs of rust are removed. After that, apply a rust converter to the spots. Rust converter is a combination of polymers and tannic acid that converts oxidized metal (rust) into a protective layer.
Prime And Paint
Next, prime and paint the fence. Use an appropriate primer and an oil-based paint that is made for application to metal. If you can spray them on, choose that application method since it usually creates a more even application. Iron fences have a lot of nooks and crannies, and a spray-on application offers better penetrations and coverage.
Wax And Grease
Finally, twice a year, you should apply a metal-grade wax. This will provide even more protection against moisture that causes rust. You should also grease all of the hinges. The constant movement at these places causes friction that wears down the paint and primer, exposing the metal to moisture and increasing the likelihood of rust. Choose a heavy-duty grease so that it lasts longer and you won’t have to do it as often. Greasing the hinges also prevents annoying squeaks, which is an added bonus.
