When it comes to choosing a fencing option, there is nothing that makes for as simple maintenance as vinyl. Unlike wood, vinyl can not splinter, warp, or rot nor can it rust and corrode like metal. As a fencing material, vinyl is becoming more and more popular. Along with being low maintenance; it’s often inexpensive to purchase, quick and easy to install, and just as strong as wood. With all these fantastic benefits in mind, let’s take a look at the few maintenance requirements that vinyl does have.
Routine Cleaning
While vinyl is less work than other types of fencing, it does still need some annual help. You should expect to clean your fencing once a year to keep it looking its best. While dirt, grime, and road salt don’t affect vinyl like they do other materials, it can still cause your fence to look less pleasing and lead to staining. For most dirt, a simple wash with a soft rag and soapy water will be enough. If you have any built-up or hard to remove dirt, never use an abrasive material. Using anything too rough can scratch your fence, causing it to lose its glossy sheen and allowing for more dirt to stick. Instead, use mineral spirits and hold it to the affected area to loosen the stain before wiping it away. If you have any mold or mildew spots, be sure to use diluted bleach or vinegar to kill any growth.
Structural Review
Along with cleaning, once a year, you should complete a full structural overview of your fence. Carefully check for signs of excessive wear including areas that might be bowing out or loose, cracks, breaks, and that the poles are all secure. While vinyl fencing is incredibly strong, if you have any features like latices, you might need to replace small sections more regularly. To prevent annoying damage, always be sure to take care when operating landscaping equipment near your vinyl fence. Even a simple weed wacker can cause damage if it hits the wrong spot.
