Chances are, you chose your chain link fence for its strength, durability, and the low amount of maintenance it takes to keep it looking great. However, that doesn’t mean that you never need to do anything to clean and maintain it! Here are some simple tips for cleaning and maintaining your chain link fence so that it protects your property for years to come.
Check for Damage
Chain link fences can get damaged, especially after severe weather events or storms, so it’s important to regularly take a walk around your fence to spot any potential problems. Include the following as part of your walk around:
- Check the posts of your chain link fence for any damage. Damage could include rust, shifting, becoming loose, or tilting.
- Check the chain link portion of your fence to see if there is any denting, damage, or cut portions. This damage probably won’t be discovered by accident, as it takes a major event to cause damage to the chain link itself.
- Check the length of the fence for any rusting if you didn’t choose to coat your chain link fence with a protective layer.
- Check the entire length of the fence for dirt or debris that needs to be removed or cleaned off.
Clean Your Chain Link Fence
While you shouldn’t need to clean your chain link fence frequently, cleaning it properly is important to keeping it in good condition. If you have any rust on your fence, that should be taken care of first. Use steel wool to remove any portions showing early signs of rust to prevent it from spreading. You can also use a commercial rust removal product designed to be used on chain link fencing.
If your chain link fence is dirty, use a garden hose to get rid of dirt and grime. If you need a little extra help, mix up a cleaning solution that is environmentally friendly and gently wipe off debris and dirt. Wear rubber gloves to keep your hands from getting dirty while doing your scrubbing!
