Perhaps you’re a homeowner who has just invested in brand new fencing. There are a lot of questions new fence owners face. Is sealing necessary? Is the fencing going to age? What weather conditions can damage the fencing? One question that can pop up is whether you should paint or stain your fencing or if you should keep it natural. Each option has its trade-offs, so we’ll go over each of them in-depth. Here is what to know about having either a painted, stained, or natural fence.
Painted Fencing
Painted fencing was more trendy back in the days before so many staining options were available. Out of all of the options, we would probably suggest painting last. It requires a sizable amount of maintenance. If you get your fencing painted, you’ll need to repaint it between one and three years later because the paint will start peeling and cracking. You also have to remove the paint that’s already on the surface and get that surface prepped. The time and money needed to keep painted fencing looking good will keep on adding up over time.
Stained Fencing
Usually, when presented two options, you’ll want to get your fence stained rather than painted. There’s a lot less maintenance involved, and there won’t be the need to stain the fencing multiple times, although the stain will eventually fade.
Stain doesn’t have the issues of peeling and cracking, meaning less preparation is needed. All you’ll have to do is power wash your fencing, and you’ll be ready to apply a new stain. You can even get a semi-transparent stain, allowing you to achieve a natural-like appearance, or go with a completely clear stain if you wish.
Natural Fencing
The last option available is to simply leave your fence as it is. This option, unsurprisingly, requires the lowest amount of effort. The problem is that weather can easily wreak havoc on your fencing. If you are okay with accepting the risks that come with leaving your fencing natural, you’ll be left with a feature that offers rustic charm to it. A little power washing is all it takes to make a natural fence look like new again when it starts to get dirty.
