Fall won’t really be here for another two weeks or so. Until then, we’re all still feeling the lingering summer heat. But as the fall approaches, it’s time to take a closer look at your fence. Here are some fence maintenance tips to help you out.
Inspect It
As with other tasks around your yard, you’ll need to start with a visual inspection. Vinyl, wood, and chain link all behave differently in different weather. For instance, vinyl and chain link are much more resistant to rotting than a wood fence is. If the posts and gates need to be repaired or replaced, then it’s time to get it done. Fences made of metal and vinyl can also hold much more weight, and as fall and winter roll in, you’ll want to be sure that your fence can withstand the assault of rain, wind, and snow.
Waterproof It
Water damage can present a huge problem when it affects the exteriors of your home. It’s even worse when there’s water damage inside your house. Your fences will wear down if they are exposed to enough water damage. So, with that in mind, do your best to waterproof your fences. Vinyl is waterproof already, and metal fences can withstand some water absorption, but not much. Don’t let them rust, or else you’ll have even more fence maintenance work to do. As we’ve noted, wood fences are most easily affected by water. You may need to add a new coat of sealant to the fence to keep any problems from getting worse.
Clear Away Debris
Our third suggestion for fence maintenance is to clear away any debris that you see. Dirt, dust, and fallen leaves can all leave their mark on your fence, no matter what it is made of.
