Wood fences are great solutions for improving your home’s curb appeal. They’ll even increase the privacy around your yard. But whether it’s due to weather damage or just old age, your wood fence will need to be disposed of eventually.
Getting Ready
Before you can do anything else, you need to make sure that old wood fence is actually yours. Talk to your neighbor. That way, you can make sure you’re not tearing down someone else’s property. You’ll also probably need to figure out where your property begins and where it ends. Once you do this, you’ll have a better idea of where to put the replacement fence.
Get in touch with utility providers to make sure they don’t have anything buried in the ground beneath your fence. You might need to rent a dumpster to hold the disassembled pieces of the fence until you can get make it to your local dumping ground.
Once You’re Ready
Now that you’ve done all that, you’re ready to take the old wood fence down. Grab a hammer and knock the vertical boards down. Pull out the nails using the claw of the hammer. Once the boards have been removed, make a tidy pile on the ground next to you. Doing this will make the boards easier to dispose of once you’re done.
Next, look at the fence posts again. This time, you’ll need to take down the horizontal boards. You’ll need to hammer them out of position again and extract the nails as well. Depending on the condition of some of the boards, you might be able to use the wood again.
With the boards gone, you can then move onto the fence posts. You can use a shovel to dig posts up if the fence’s base is in some dirt. Then, you can use physics to remove the fence using ropes, bricks, and wood. If the fence is supported by concrete, then you’ll still need to dig and then use a mattock to dig down deeper.
