Condensation isn’t just a problem on windows. Believe it or not it can be a problem for your fence, too. Look out for signs of mold damage on your fence and address them as soon as possible. Here’s what you should do.
Signs of Damage
Mold damage will ruin your wood fences, but it can affect all types of residential fence, even the ones made of vinyl. You’ll see orange, yellow, or green spots and circles. Depending on the type of mold it is, it’ll look different. The worst is black mold, which an allergen and can make you, your family, and your pets incredibly sick.
If you have a wood fence, the first sign that something is wrong is when the posts start to lean. Look at the boards and rails of your fence for signs of rotting, cracking, or splitting. All of these can be caused by excess moisture. Gates that don’t open and close as they should and rusting latches and hinges on the gate also point to a possible mold infestation.
Getting Rid of Mold
Scrubbing away the mold with water should be enough if you’ve found it early enough. If not, then some dish soap will help the trick. However, if that didn’t cut it, then it’s time to resort to vinegar and bleach. Just make sure you don’t splash the plants around your fence, as the vinegar or bleach (don’t mix them together!) could kill the plant. Wait for a day with good weather, then grab your pressure washer and get to work.
Replacing Your Fence
At some point, you will need to replace your fence. Hopefully, you stopped the mold before it could take hold. Even so, you might need to replace posts, nails, boards, or rails. Disassemble the fence, take out the mold-damaged parts, and put in new ones in their place.
