If your yard is like many people’s yards, then yours is probably not completely straight and flat. You may think this would make installing a fence impossible, but not to worry because there are still fences that can work, even if your landscape is not perfectly level. These are stepped fences and sloped fences. Each comes with benefits and drawbacks, and they are both worth your consideration if you’re thinking about getting a new fence. Today, we’re going to compare the differences between a stepped fence and a sloped fence.
Stepped Fence
Just as the name may suggest, a stepped fence is a type of fence that replicates the look of a staircase upon being completed. With a stepped fence, the rails will stay horizontal, and the fence posts will be extended so that they are suited for the uneven terrain of your yard. Every section will be attached to the fence post so that it can follow the grade.
Typically, you’re better off using pre-made fencing panels when you install a stepped fence. This is because it will usually cost less money overall, and it helps the installation go as smoothly and easily as possible.
There are a couple of downsides with a stepped fence, one of the most notable being that your fence will have gaps. People may not like this aspect of stepped fences because it harms the visual appeal of the fence. It’s also easier for different animals to get in and out of your yard. You could offset this setback by installing landscaping fill or putting planters along your fence railing’s bottom.
Sloped Fence
If you choose to get a sloped fence instead, you’ll get fence posts that are installed vertically. However, you’ll have your horizontal rails placed at a certain angle so that it can account for the sloped landscape.
With sloped fences, you won’t have space between the ground and your fence’s bottom. This means animals won’t be able to squeeze through your fence and get in or out of the yard.
While these fences have nicer sight lines, you’ll have to get individual pieces instead of using panels.
