With warmer weather coming in, it’s time to get outside. Whether you need to build a new fence for a dog you are adopting, or you own a farm and you want to make sure that your animals don’t run free, you’re going to need a fence. Here is a guide to how to measure your yard so you can make it happen.
Figure Out Property Lines
Before you can get started assembling the fence, you need to find out where your property lines are. By doing this, you can avoid nasty disputes with your neighbors. Also, it’s important to check with your HOA or your property owners to make sure that you can build a fence. After that’s done, you need to figure out the size of the fence, the length, and what materials it can be made of; in other words, don’t violate fence etiquette.
Find Utilities
Although the utility lines that serve your home are important, you’ll almost never see them. That’s because most of them are buried underground or are in the air above your house. Either way, the next step is to find the utility lines. This avoids disruptions in your water, electrical, and TV and internet service. But when you do this, you can also prevent accidents and mishaps that could damage the lines or injure the fence contractors who are building the fence for you.
Trees, bushes, rocks, and sloping terrain can also get in the way of the fence being built, so you’ll have to get them out of the way somehow. Marking everything is a good first step, so even if you don’t have time to move things, at least the workers will know what to avoid. It also helps you, too, especially if you are tackling this project alone.
Marking the Measurements
It’s time to start making measurements. Determine the size of the perimeter in feet and do some math to see how much it is when you divide it by the size of your fence panels. Put stakes in each corner of your yard. Then mark your line posts and end posts.
