Spring is coming up in less than a month. Summer is right behind it. February is fading away, and while not every day is super warm, it’s still a good idea to start reopening your pool. If it needs some new pieces, then this is a good time to figure out how to upgrade your swimming pool. One way to do that is to pick out a new fence to keep the area around it safe and secure.
The Blueprints
Your new pool fence needs to be at least five feet high. Anything lower than that defeats the purpose. Speak to your HOA board to determine how tall your fence can be – some communities have restrictions on that factor for one reason or another. It’s also a good idea to speak to county agencies to see the laws regarding fence construction and regulations for fences around backyard pools. The height is important since a tall enough fence will keep anyone out. Avoid using chain link fences, since they are much easier to climb than other types are.
Base Materials
Wood and vinyl are the two most common types of materials used for swimming pool fences. However, we must point out that these aren’t the best materials for the job. Moisture damage can ruin wooden fences and eventually wear down vinyl, even though vinyl is more resistant to the effects of mold, mildew, and rot caused by constant exposure to water. It turns out that ornamental iron is actually the best choice for this project.
Gates and Alarms
Two other essential security features are access gates and intrusion alarms. Putting in a gate makes it easier to get in and out of the pool area. However, locks and latches should be engaged when the pool isn’t in use. Installing a self-close mechanism is worth the investment because it means that nobody will forget to lock up after they are done swimming. Alarms can be triggered by motion or whenever the gate opens. Resetting the alarm needs to happen every time someone uses the pool.
