Believe it or not, we are heading into the bottom half of summer here on the East Coast, and many residents of the area know what that means: rain, storms, and possible hurricanes. You do everything you can to protect your home and family from these often-violent storms, but your fence is outside facing the elements. What can you do to protect it?
Trim Your Trees
Trimming trees isn’t exclusive to holiday celebrations! In the summer, trees near your fence should be cut back. When gusting, gale-force winds come along, you don’t want stray tree branches knocking into the fence and causing damage. If you have any trees on your property that are dead or dying, those should also be removed as soon as possible. Between saturated ground from the heavy rains and strong winds blowing, the dead and dying trees can easily be up-rooted by a strong enough storm.
Remove Loose Objects
Anything loose, such as children’s toys or lawn furniture should be removed in preparation for a storm. If these items can’t be brought into a storage area, such as a garage, shed, or basement, they should be secured. Heavy winds can lift items and toss them all around. This will not only damage your fence, but potentially your house or car as well.
Fix All Damage
Any spots that are even the slightest bit damaged should be fixed immediately. If the damage can’t be fixed, the section should be replaced. Strong storms can cause further damage to the fence. If the damage is bad enough, or something is particularly loose, it may even blow away part of the fence!
