Getting a splinter is extremely painful. Even though it might seem like a nuisance, that won’t make it hurt any less. When you have a wooden fence around your yard, you’ll need to be extra careful when it’s time to take care of it. You could even say that you need to practice constant vigilance. If you’ve got splinters in your wooden fence, then here’s what you’ve got to do.
Things You Will Need
Make sure you’ve got some sandpaper on hand. If you don’t then you will need to get some. Make sure that the sandpaper is coarse and fine grain. Then you will also want to put on some gloves to protect your hands – that way, you won’t accidentally poke yourself with any stray splinters that you didn’t notice. Find some wood putty that is the same color as your fence. Grab a damp cloth, since it will be more useful than you might think. Finally, choose a matte polyurethane spray over a glossy one. Matte sprays look better since a gloss spray will stick out in the wrong way – it just won’t look right.
How to Begin
Let’s get started. First off, clean your fence. If you haven’t done this task all summer, then there is no time like the present. Just get it over with. Pollen and mildew can get in the way and slow the entire process down. Use both types of sandpaper to sand down the fence, getting rid of rough edges and splinters at the same time. After you have finished sanding, use the damp cloth to remove any loose particles you might have missed.
Using Some Putty
The next step is to use some putty. Before you can do this, though, give the wooden fence an hour or so to finish drying off. Once the time is up, use the putty to fill in rough spots and pits that can affect the aesthetic appeal of your fence. This also prevents further splintering from happening. Give the putty an hour or two to dry. You might have to sand down the dried putty to ensure that it looks even.
Putting Some Seal On It
The last step is to apply some sealant. Spray the affected section of the fence with your matte spray. This sealant helps protect the fence against bad weather and insect attacks.
