Before You Start
Before you get started on the fresh coat of paint, make sure that you:
- Mow the lawn around the bottom of the fence so that the grass won’t interfere
- Remove any dirt or debris from on or around the fence
- Use a pressure washer or powerful hose to clean off the fence
- Let the fence dry completely
- If there is currently paint on the wood fence, scrape it off or sand it off
- Check the length of your wood fence for any termite damage or insect infestation
- Tape down the hardware and hinges so that they don’t get paint on them
- Put down a drop cloth or tarp around the fence
During the Fence Painting Process
While you paint your fence, make sure that you:
- Work in sections, one at a time
- Don’t work during the hottest part of the day or in periods of direct sunlight (this makes the paint dry too quickly)
- Work slowly around areas of your fence that have plants or shrubs nearby
- Check the weather every day (and during the day) to make sure that rain or storms aren’t on the way
- Make sure that you have the proper amount of help to get the job done in a reasonable amount of time
