Wooden fences are wonderful to have around the yard. They have a timeless and traditional aesthetic that’s sure to be a pleasant sight to anyone walking past your home. Unfortunately, these fences can develop holes, which can be brought about by many different factors. Holes are an unsightly bother that you’ll want to fix, but before anything else, you want to know what’s causing these holes so that more don’t develop later. Here are some reasons your fencing could develop holes.
Horntail Wasps
Normally, horntail wasps won’t pose any issue to people’s fences because they tend to lay eggs in holes that they dig into trees. The life cycle of these critters often takes place inside of trees, but there are scenarios in which they can make their way into wooden fencing. They don’t have stingers because, contrary to what their name would suggest, they aren’t actually wasps.
These critters are typically pretty easy to remove. Once they’re gone, you can fill any holes they’ve made by using a sealant of some kind. Just ensure that your fence’s holes are clean because you don’t want water staying inside of the holes to cause fungus.
Powderpost Beetles
Among all of the different beetles you can find, these are among the most destructive towards wood. Many people don’t know how these beetles behave, so it’s easy to misdiagnose how holes developed in your wood fencing. What they do is create small holes within the surface of wood that has not been treated. Then, they leave their eggs in the holes they make, and eventually, both the larvae and adults end up burrowing out of the fence. You’ll likely notice sawdust near your fence when powderpost beetles are causing trouble.
You’ll need to treat your fence by using a preservative to deal with whatever beetles are bothering your fence. If your fence has sustained enough damage, it might be necessary to replace the fence entirely. A fencing professional can provide insight if you’re unsure of what steps to take next.
